When Church Hurts You

Church hurt is real—and it can shake your faith in deep ways. In this episode, we talk honestly about spiritual wounds, the difference between unintentional hurt and abuse, and how Jesus still meets us in the middle of the mess.

Show Notes:

Guidelines for Navigating Church Hurt:

  1. Recognize that Pain and Suffering are Inevitable - And Not a Reflection of God’s Heart

    • Hurt in the church is, unfortunately, part of life in a broken world. It doesn’t reflect God’s heart, but it’s something every believer may face. We must separate God’s character from people’s failures.

  2. Become Spiritually Mature

    • Growth often comes through hardship. Like Paul, we’re called to keep going—even when wronged—allowing trials to sanctify us and deepen our faith.

  3. Don’t Let the Process of Healing Stall You Out.

    • It’s easy to sit in offense, but healing requires movement. Don’t wait for apologies or justice to move forward—Jesus calls us to follow Him regardless of what others do.

Scripture References:

  • John 21:21–22 – When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!”

  • Proverbs 27:17“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

  • Hebrews 5:12–14 – For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

  • James 1:2–4 – Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

  • Romans 5:8“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

  • Luke 22:42“Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
